Electrical / Electronic Equipments inside the building during
a lightning
To protect electrical/ electronic
equipments inside a building or a structure, Shielding*, Equipotential
bonding*, safety distances*, routing of all metal wires (earth
wire, power lines, telephone lines, data lines etc) according
to Lightning Protection Zones** are more important.
Equipotential bonding measures** using SPDs (Surge Protection
Devices) can protect electrical / electronic equipments from transient
over voltages created due to a lightning impulse or switching
action. Approximately 30 % failures in electronic equipments are
because of transient over voltages according to the leading insurance
companies. According to a study by IBM, over 80 % of failures
in the power supply of computers are because of transient surges.
A wrong insulation co-ordination*** can create deterioration of
devices in the electrical network resulting in the reduction of
expected life of switchgears, cables and associated equipments.
